When we set out to make the most ambitious blanket to date, we enlisted the help of one of the most respected outdoor brands in the world—Mountain Hardwear. Based off of their iconic Ghost Whisperer down jacket, we decided that the best way to test this blanket would be a trip to the highest peak in the world: Mt. Everest.
The first order of business in the design process was to make a wish-list of must-haves for an expedition-ready blanket. Aside from the obvious (lightweight, warm, packable), small details emerged that would make this blanket an indispensable piece of gear.
When you need to bring extra weight up thousands of meters, any ounce you can shed makes each step that much more manageable. This is why we designed the Mountaineer Blanket to weigh less than a pound (.88lbs, to be exact). The porters and pack animals in Nepal would surely appreciate the lighter load as they worked their way up to Base Camp. For the rest of us carrying our own packs on a multi-day-or-week hike, an ultralight blanket is equally important.
Knowing that the Mountaineer Blanket would be tested at length in such extreme conditions, we packed it with high-quality, 800-fill goose down, nearly matching the fill weight as Mountain Hardwear’s Phantom Alpine™ sleeping bags while taking up a fraction of the weight and space.
In September 2019 Mountain Hardwear supported an employee- and athlete-driven trek from Lukla to Everest Base Camp. Along the 10 day journey, the Rumpl X Mountain Hardwear performed like a dream, keeping the climbers cozy every time they needed to stop and catch their breath. Together, Rumpl X Mountain Hardwear designed the first Rumpl blanket to make it to Everest Base Camp (that we know of). So is it ready to tackle your next adventure? We’re betting yes.
